Galveston Island

Galveston Island . . . Where Happiness and Peace Surround You.
YOU FEEL IT almost immediately as you cross the Causeway, a combined sense of relief and joyous escape -- even if it's for a day. Best thing about Galveston, it's only an hour's drive from Houston!

About my cottage . . . . This is an old 19th-Century tenant house, updated with modern-day conveniences and restored only delicately so. It offers a story of survival -- as likely part of it was rebuilt from lumber scraps piled up for the taking after the infamous 1900 Storm. It now wears a time-honored patina and conveys a very happy vibe.

It's not perfection or all completely new. And, you know what? That's what makes it so incredibly wonderful.

This blog is dedicated to the house and island so loved and enjoyed. Please visit again -- and watch for photos and other updates.

It's a new day...

Early morning -- after the last seasonal party

in Galveston . . .

What a nice holiday it's been. Now, it's back to work. And what better place to begin the new work year than at the cottage. With temps hovering at a chilly low, we're snug as a bug here. Sam has found his spot on the slipcovered sofa, and Casey is curled up on the seagrass.

I had just gotten up to refill my coffee mug when I turned around, feeling very content with what I saw:

I love winter time at the beach; it's absolutely my favorite time ... this scene below caught my eye. I like how the clouds seem to rest on the watery horizon. It's rather quiet.

Happy New Year, y'all.

My Galveston Cottage

Welcome to my island getaway . . .

I'm inviting you inside.
And, if you'd like to stay here for a night or more, please let me know. I'm offering friends and colleagues I know special rates. Email me at susanf_19@yahoo.com to check availability.

It's my interpretation of caribbean style, beginning with the Cayman-blue watery hues selected for the exterior, and the selected furnishings and color palette inside. An orange hibiscus plant in front inspired the energetic and bold front door color, as well as the accent shades on the window muntins.

When you walk in, the floor plan is open. Two walls were removed for better flow and livability. In the living area, you'll notice the scrappy green walls; they are original and a celebration of sorts, recognizing the home's approximate 130 years. The wide floor planks, now painted, were hidden below layers of Linoleum and carpeting.

When I purchased the house last summer, it was a rental -- just as it had been for most of its life. I'll post some of the Before shots at the end of this post, in case you'd like to see it.

It was a two bedroom, one-bath house. Now, it's a one-bedroom home -- 750 square feet, and the second bedroom is now a very accommodating new kitchen. It has both new electrical and plumbing.

The backyard, where a small old shed stood to house a water heater, was once filled with grass burrs and two rotting wood decks. All have been removed. And fruit, palm and banana trees, along with veggies, herbs and roses, surround the house in soon-to-be lush abundance.

So, come on in . . .

The furnishings  -- teak, wicker and slipcovers -- evoke an easy, carefree island style.

Screened-in porch with fan and heater, accessible from living room, leads down a couple of steps to patio.
Fruit and palm trees in the backyard, in addition to a Grill Dome by Kamado.
Bedroom.

King-size bed.

Large armoire.

The shiplap walls are an original color and kept "as-is" in celebration of its history and survival.

Seating faces a flat-screen, smart TV on the wall not seen.  Sorry no cable here (smile) . . . it's an island, time for relaxation. Netflix and Amazon and other streaming, however, are  available via Wifi.

Butcher block and old marble on the countertops. Porcelain on the floors. Gas stove, dishwasher, microwave;
all new appliances.

Gas stove, and, yes, the washer-dryer combo is in the kitchen -- taking a lead from small European retreats;the best news about its location is that it provides extra countertop space.
